One throwaway line in Thursday’s General Hospital has fans doing math. In the middle of his fight with Ava over their daughter, Sonny told Carly he wasn’t going to push it, because “Avery’s a teenager.”
The exact line
Sonny was venting to Carly about the fallout from the Pentonville beating. Curtis has pointed the finger at Sonny’s men, Dante doesn’t believe his father, and Ava has moved fast. “Ava’s already, you know, taking advantage of the situation,” Sonny said. “She’s trying to get me not to see Avery.”
Carly’s verdict: “That woman doesn’t miss a trick.”
Then came the line: “I’m not going to push that, because Avery’s a teenager. I don’t want her getting caught up in these lies about her father.”
What Ava said to his face
Earlier in the episode Sonny came looking for his daughter. Ava told him Avery was at home and “she’s going to stay that way because I’m not letting you anywhere near her… Not after what you had done at Pentonville.” She added: “I’d like to spare her from having to hear all of your lies.”
Sonny insisted, “I had nothing to do with the beating at Pentonville,” and warned her: “You don’t get to put conditions on her relationship with me.” He said he’d let it go for Avery’s sake this time, “but if you don’t bring her next Saturday, I’m going to get her myself, and you’re not going to like that.” Ava’s parting shot: “Why, you going to have me roughed up like you did Sidwell?”
Why “teenager” caught fans’ attention
- Avery’s real age: Avery Corinthos was born on the show in 2014. Going by that, she would only turn 12 this November, so “teenager” doesn’t fit the calendar.
- Who has played her: twins Ava and Grace Scarola have played Avery since her birth, and they are the same age as the character.
- What’s been reported: Soaps.com (SheKnows) wrote on October 8 that, with this line, the show has aged Avery up to a teen. It also said there is no word on whether Avery is being recast, who would play her, or when.
- What is not confirmed: ABC and General Hospital have not announced a recast or a new actress for Avery. Anything beyond Sonny’s line is speculation for now.
Soaps.com also noted that Charlotte’s move to boarding school left a gap among Port Charles’ teens, which an older Avery could fill.
