Why GH's Head Writers Turned Drew Cain Into a Villain —

General Hospital news · Wednesday, October 14, 2026

Drew Cain used to be the Navy SEAL hero of Port Charles. Now he’s one of the most despised men in town. In an exclusive interview with Soap Opera Digest published Oct. 13, General Hospital head writers Elizabeth Korte and Chris Van Etten explained, for the first time, why they took Cameron Mathison’s character down the dark path.

The reason, in their own words

“I think there are a number of things that played into it,” Van Etten told the magazine. The big one: the Quartermaine family, he said, “thrives when there is conflict within it.”

Korte put it even more bluntly: “The Quartermaines needed an A.J. They needed an Alan. And Drew was ideally positioned.”

Soap Opera Digest notes the family lost its built-in troublemakers over the years — Edward died in 2012, A.J. was killed in 2014 and Tracy became the matriarch — leaving no black sheep to fight with. Van Etten said Drew “seemed positioned best, as a newcomer to the family and as a relative outsider within it.” (Drew only learned he was a Quartermaine, the son of Alan and Susan Moore and Jason’s twin, in 2017.)

It was already in him

Both writers insisted the turn wasn’t random. Korte said it “arose out of intrinsic character traits,” and Van Etten said they wanted to “really lean into what was already established about that character.” His read on Drew: “he has quite a heroic bent” — “but he also likes to see himself as a hero.”

According to the magazine, the shift began after Drew served time for insider trading in 2023. His affair with Willow while she was still married to his nephew Michael sealed his villain status with the family.

What Drew is doing on screen right now

This week’s episodes show the man the writers described. On Monday (Oct. 12), Drew stormed into Lulu’s living room over her article about Willow. Lulu asked him point-blank: “Did you know Willow was drugging you?” Drew dodged and went after her daughter instead, then warned her: “You want me to stop threatening you and your family, then stay the hell away from mine.”

On Tuesday (Oct. 13), at Trina and Gio’s show at the Cat’s Eye Lounge, Drew told Ava how he’ll handle Lulu’s story: “I’m going to deny everything. Willow didn’t drug me to keep me locked in. It was all lies.” His reason? Taking Willow down would be “giving Michael and the rest of the [Quartermaines] a gift,” and Lulu’s article ties his collapse to Jack Brennan’s — a spotlight neither he nor Ava wants. He also reminded Ava: “The assault on Sidwell was your idea.”

Soap Opera Digest’s summary of his recent schemes includes framing Nina for Brennan’s disappearance and working with Ava to frame Sonny for the assault at Pentonville.

What’s next

Spoilers for this week say Lulu is served with a libel lawsuit from Willow — the same story Drew has now decided to call “all lies.”
