Cameron Mathison is still riding high that Congressman Drew Cain survived what many General Hospital fans feared would be his final, fatal showdown. The popular — and polarizing — character recently endured a shocking attack in his own home, where an unknown assailant shot him twice in the back at point-blank range. It was a tense, nail-biting scene that left viewers gasping and theorizing who could have pulled the trigger.
“I could practically hear the collective ‘Noooo!’ from viewers across the world,” Mathison said with a laugh. “When I fluttered my eyes open, I felt like I was teasing them a little: ‘Surprise, everyone — Drew Cain is still here!’”
General Hospital Spoilers: Cameron Mathison Reveals He Was Sure Drew Cain Would Be Killed Off After Brutal Shooting
Drew Cain has always lived on the edge. Since his return to Port Charles, the Congressman-turned-troublemaker has left a long trail of enemies — friends betrayed, alliances broken, and secrets unearthed. Mathison admitted that when Drew’s scheming escalated, he had genuine concerns about whether his time on the soap was coming to an end.
“Absolutely. One thousand percent I thought Drew might be done for,” Mathison revealed. “When a character accumulates enemies like that, it’s easy to smell when someone’s about to get written off for the sake of a bigger storyline. I’ve been in this business long enough to recognize when the axe might be coming.”
The Villain We Love to Hate
Fortunately for fans — and for Mathison — Drew survived, and it seems the character’s status as a first-class provocateur was enough to keep him alive. “Drew’s a strong villain,” Mathison said. “He’s not out killing people left and right, but he makes waves, drives the story forward, and creates drama wherever he goes. That’s gold for General Hospital. I was thrilled to know I wasn’t going anywhere.”
Drew’s survival also opens up more room for tension with key characters, including his beloved Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) and the ever-complicated Michael Corinthos (Rory Gibson). Mathison explained that Drew wastes no time using his near-death experience as a weapon.
“Within minutes of waking up, he’s already plotting,” Mathison teased. “He’s going to try to pin this on Michael, whether Michael is guilty or not. Drew believes this is the perfect chance to manipulate the situation so Willow can get closer to her kids, Wiley and Amelia. He’s a master strategist — ruthless, clever, and completely unbothered by morality.”
A Character That Keeps Fans Hooked
Drew Cain has always been a character who thrives in gray areas — part charming hero, part scheming villain. Over the years, he’s tangled with mob bosses, navigated dangerous family dynamics, and tested the limits of love and loyalty in Port Charles. His near-fatal shooting is just the latest example of how far writers are willing to push the boundaries for drama.
“Drew’s not a good person, and that’s why fans love to hate him,” Mathison said. “He’s manipulative, unpredictable, and always has an angle. That makes him fun to play and keeps the story exciting. It’s why I’ve stayed so grateful to be part of this show.”
With Drew back in action, Mathison promises fans there’s no shortage of chaos to come. “It’s game on,” he said. “He’s awake, scheming, and ready to shake up Port Charles. Buckle up, because Drew Cain isn’t going anywhere, and he’s more dangerous than ever.”
