Drew Cain thought he was agreeing to a puff piece. By the end of Wednesday’s General Hospital, Lulu Spencer was holding his signed HIPAA waiver, standing at the nurses’ station, and hearing two doctors say out loud what no one in Port Charles has wanted to say: Drew’s stroke and Jack Brennan’s stroke look far too alike to be a coincidence.
The pitch: “your comeback story”
Lulu sat Drew down and sold it as a hero’s journey. “I want to write a story about your amazing recovery from the stroke,” she told him — a stroke that left him unable to move or speak, followed by months of no progress, and then speech and mobility back “seemingly overnight.” She flattered him (“Some people might call it a miracle”) and dangled the one thing Drew can’t resist: control of the narrative. The press, she pointed out, has made the story about Willow caring for him at home even after she took over his congressional seat. “This isn’t her story. This is yours.”
Drew bit. “From the public’s perspective, my recovery happened overnight, but that couldn’t be further from the truth,” he said, crediting his Navy SEAL-era workouts. He dodged an on-the-record interview “now,” but agreed to meet that night — and, crucially, signed the waiver letting Lulu talk to his doctors.
What Elizabeth and Lucas told her
Elizabeth wasn’t thrilled to find Lulu requesting Drew’s file, but she and Lucas answered her questions. Both were on duty when Drew was brought in. The stroke protocol started immediately “based off of Willow’s description of Drew’s symptoms,” Liz said — Willow’s nursing background was “key.” Willow was “there every step of the way.” Was it unusual for her to care for him at home instead of a long-term facility? “I’d say so,” Lucas admitted. Any experimental treatment that could explain a full recovery? “Not that I’m aware of.”
Then Lulu asked the question: “How many people completely recover from locked-in syndrome?”
Lucas: Drew was his first locked-in patient — “but since then I’ve had one more. Jack Brennan.” Liz added that there are “some surprising similarities between Drew’s and Brennan’s cases.” Brennan’s stroke also happened at Drew’s house. The hospital suspected something environmental, like black mold; the board of health got involved and declared the house clean.
Lulu laid it out: two healthy men, strokes in the same house within six months, both locked-in, both making a full recovery. “What are the odds of that happening?” The answer she got: “I’d say a million to one.”
The name that keeps coming up
Notice whose name sits in the middle of every answer Lulu got: Willow. She described Drew’s symptoms. She was at his side at every step. She kept him at home instead of sending him to a facility. Viewers have watched Willow and Nina deal with Drew’s growing “tolerance” to a drug and a dwindling supply, and Brennan’s own “stroke” later turned out to be far more suspicious than it looked (SheKnows recap, July 9). Lulu doesn’t know any of that yet. But she now has the shared house, the shared diagnosis and the shared impossible recovery.
What’s next
Thursday’s spoilers say “Lulu’s latest article causes a stir” (Entertainment Now). The spoiler doesn’t say what the article contains — so the big question is whether Lulu publishes the flattering comeback piece Drew signed up for, or the “million to one” story he never saw coming. And Drew agreed to sit down with her tonight, not knowing what she learned at GH this afternoon.
Your turn: Is Lulu about to expose the truth — or is she walking straight into danger by sitting across from Drew tonight? Tell us in the comments.
